- This page is about the current version of the Metro operator. For the original version, see Metro (Legacy).
Metro, stylised in all lowercase, is a rapid rail transit operator in Stepford County Railway that was released in Version 2.2. Services are focused on the Metro Core Section in Stepford, with routes going to Willowfield, Stepford Victoria, Stepford UFC, Port Benton, Morganstown, Barton, Greenslade & Stepford Bay.
The original plans of the operator intended to operate a rapid rail transit system connecting the Stepford City Zone with various districts around Stepford County, such as Coxly, Winstree, Morganstown, Whitefield, Berrily and Stepford Airport. These plans were cancelled by 2018, with most tracks and stations being demolished, transferred to Stepford Connect, or left abandoned. The original operator would be confirmed cancelled during a Directors Q&A session in 2020.[1]
New plans for the operator were first teased in a sneak peek released on 29 December 2024, with a red background and text stating "New year new me", and the addition of the operator confirmed in a second sneak peek of a Class 777 a day later, and a logo being released. Operations officially began on 11 May 2025 when Version 2.2 was released, adding 19 routes and 7 trains.
The operator uses a coral red (#EE4044) and frost blue (#DBF3FF) colour scheme, which is slightly different from the thunderbird red (#C4281C) colour scheme that was originally intended back in 2017.
History
2017
- 25 November
- Stepford County Railway opens. Plans for an operator under the name Metro were first created along with this release, then as a rapid rail transit system. Due to the short travel times, the operator could have been classified as commuter rail, or as regional rail due to the large size of the network.
2018
- 21 April - Version 1.0
- By this time, plans for this operator were scrapped and the infrastructure was demolished (e.g. the Metro Loop as well as Winstree station), transferred to Stepford Connect, or left abandoned (e.g. Coxly Newtown and Upper Staploe). Certain plans for branches were kept, but now as extensions to the Stepford Connect network.
- 31 December - Version 1.1
- The stations on the Morganstown Branch as well as the stations between Stepford Central and Stepford Victoria open under Stepford Connect. Beechley and Willowfield stations were renamed to City Hospital and Financial Quarter, respectively.
2019
- 28 April - Version 1.2
- The stations on the Whitefield Branch open under Stepford Connect. This leaves only the abandoned stations at Coxly Newtown and Upper Staploe left without service.

Trivia
- Metro does not have its own headquarters building, being the only operator to lack one.
- A commercial building at Willowfield that would have presumably filled that role was introduced in Version 1.4, even though it was boarded up and likely abandoned. The building was since removed in Version 1.8.
- Metro's introduction and takeover of high-intensity commuter services from Stepford Connect allowed the latter operator to focus on regional services.
- The voice announcer for Metro is David Sheppard, who does the announcements in real life for Great Western Railway and Reading Buses.[2]
- Many Legacy Edition games include functional interpretations of the original plans of this operator, though there were never any routes, depots or rolling stock officially confirmed for the operator before the development of Metro in Version 2.2.
- The original plans for the operator included its very own loop, running entirely in the Stepford City Zone. It was planned to go after Stepford Victoria, going in a loop until arriving at St Helens Bridge. However, after Metro was cancelled, all of the stations on that loop which were solely serving Metro were demolished, with the exclusion of the remaining Stepford Victoria Branch.
- Until Version 1.6, Coxly Newtown was the only Metro station which could be accessed, although only by trespassing. In the aforementioned update, it was walled up and given a notice stating that Metro no longer serves the station and advising passengers to use Coxly just 5 minutes up the road.
- Metro's legacy logo was set in the Franklin Gothic typeface.
- Metro is the first new operator in over 5 years since Stepford Express' release on 17 December 2019 in V1.4, as well as being the first new operator to have been previously cancelled.
- For a short time after Metro's introduction, there was no badge awarded to players for driving their first service on the operator.
- Some people were disappointed with the release date of Metro, as the update was released shortly after the promised release frame of early 2025. With a release in mid-May 2025, it falls out of the range of the early year, January–April.
- With 26 routes, Metro operates the second most routes in-game.
- Metro was first released with 20 routes in-game, the highest initial route pool for any operator.
- The route pool included twelve Stepford Connect routes[n 1] transferred to Metro and eight new routes.
- Those aforementioned routes were the first routes to ever change operators.
- The route pool included twelve Stepford Connect routes[n 1] transferred to Metro and eight new routes.
- Metro was first released with 20 routes in-game, the highest initial route pool for any operator.
- Metro is the second operator to not serve Stepford Airport, after Stepford Express.
- As of Version 2.3, Metro is the only operator where all trains can operate under electric power.
- All Metro trains either carry the logo or the Metro word mark on the front of the train. It is also the only operator to not have any trains with yellow front ends.
- Metro is the only operator that does not skip any stations in regular service.
- However, Metro does skip Beechley when spawning from Marston Hill TMD when driving R006, R008, R023, R136, R137 and R144, Berrily when spawning from Manea Hill TMD when driving R132, R133 and R134, and Beechley and City Hospital when spawning from Marston Hill TMD when driving R143, as empty coaching stock [ECS].
- Metro has the youngest fleet out of any operator in-game, with the oldest train, the Class 717, first being put into revenue service in September 2018.
- As a result, Metro is the only operator to have its entire fleet be introduced after the initial release of SCR.
- This operator also has the least amount of rolling stock available, with 5 units (excluding variants).
- With the introduction of the Class 398, some players speculate that Metro's tram-train service took over the function of Tramlink.
- Metro is one of two operators that does not have any trains withdrawn from real life, the other being Stepford Express.
